More than every fifth person living in Austria was born abroad. On January 1, 2024, 2.038 million people born abroad were living in Austria, which corresponds to 22.3 percent of the total population. Compared to the beginning of the year five years ago, the proportion has risen by 2.7 percentage points, according to a new brochure published by the Integration Fund (ÖIF). The largest group of people not born in Austria comes from Germany (265,100).
The second largest group was born in Bosnia-Herzegovina (178,900), followed by Turkey (165,300). Within Austria, the proportion of the population with a foreign place of birth was highest in the federal capital, Vienna, at 40.2 percent. This was followed by Vorarlberg (23.2), Salzburg (21.7), and Tyrol (20.9). The lowest proportion was in Burgenland, at 13.6 percent.
Almost 200,000 immigrants

German citizens also made up the largest group of immigrants last year (19,800), followed by people from Romania (19,300), Ukraine (15,700), and Syria (15,200). The figures on population development in the ÖIF’s brochure on the federal provinces published on the national holiday come from Statistics Austria.
